Question – how do I become a cancer registrar?

I am asked this question almost every week and the answer is, it depends.  OK, so that may not be the answer you were looking for, and it is certainly not all wrapped up neat and tidy, but it is the honest truth.

Becoming a cancer registrar depends on several things:  1) formal education and degree(s) you have; 2) work and life experience you have gained, 3) access to schools, online programs, 4) cancer programs, hospitals and registries in your geographic region, and 5) your motivation and desire to become a cancer registrar.  Many folks only focus on the first two items thinking that they can just zoom through a program, step inside a hospital and voila! they have a job.  Rarely does it happen this way.

Your motivation and desire to become a cancer registrar is going to be your first career test.  Do you have what it takes to do this work?  Do you have, what my Pops used to call, gumption?

You need to immerse yourself in everything cancer registry to understand the language, terminology and how it works.  Become a student in the professional practice of being a cancer registrar.  In other words, begin marketing yourself  as an employable individual who is worth investing in as a new cancer registrar.  Don’t wait for invitations or for someone to stand up and invite you to get started, start now and keep going until you land your dream job.  This is SO important!

Now, if you want to step to the head of the line to be interviewed and offered a job, how you market yourself makes a big difference.  We’ll talk about this again on this blog but to get you started, I found a great career article, “Career Boosters: 5 Ways to Set Yourself Apart” that you need to read.
